Helm (12A13)
This ship's wheel or helm was recovered from the Liberty ship James Eagan Layne lost in Whitsand Bay. The helm was recovered in the 1960s by Peter Browne, BSAC 1st class diver No. 4, and was then used to steer a yacht he built in 1982.
The steering position was on the top of the accomodation block in front of the funnel. It was originally thought that all of the fittings from the steering position had been removed when the ship was still afloat but the recovery of the weel by a diver shows that some of the gear was still in place some years later on.
