Builder's Plate (14A16)
Each Liberty ship had a builders plate fixed to the front of the accommodation block that showed the name of the ship, the hull number and where the ship was built. Two thirds of the plate from the Liberty ship James Eagan Layne has been recovered with the remaining third reconstructed later.
The text on the plate says:
S.S. JAMES EAGAN LAYNE
BUILT FOR
U.S. MARITIME COMMISSION
HULL NO 2831
BY
DELTA SHIPBUILDING COMPANY, INC
NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA
DECEMBER 1944
