Liberty 70 Dedication Plaque (11A24)

This dedication plaque was given to the Liberty ship James Eagan Layne by the Standard Oil Company at the time of her launch and was hung in the captain's quarters. The plaque is now in private hands and appears to have been recovered at the time of the sinking.

The text on the plaque reads:

'SS JAMES EAGAN LAYNE

THIS VESSEL was named by the United States Maritime Commission to honor the memory of Second Assistant Engineer JAMES EAGAN LAYNE, who los his life April 8, 1942, when our tanker ESSO BATON ROUGE was torpedoed in the North Atlantic. We dedicate this plaque in tribute to his devotion to duty and heroic sacrifice in the service of his country.

1945 STANDARD OIL COMPANY (New Jersey)'
