The Liberty 70 Project: Request for Finds for the US National WWII Museum
The US National WWII Museum has partnered with the SHIPS Project to develop a new exhibit about the US Merchant Marine and the Liberty ship S.S. James Eagan Layne.
March 2015 is the 70th anniversary of the sinking of the US Liberty ship S.S. James Eagan Layne. Launched in New Orleans in December 1944 the ship was beached near Plymouth, England, on 21st March 1945 after being torpedoed by the German submarine U-399. The Liberty 70 Project has been documenting all aspects of the life of this vessel as a wartime transport, a shipwreck, commercial salvage job, the classic UK wreck dive and as an artificial reef.
The National WWII Museum in New Orleans, USA, is creating a new exhibit to depict the epic story of the US Merchant Marine and the iconic Liberty ships during WWII. Part of that exhibit will tell the story of the S.S. James Eagan Layne from when she was launched at the Delta Shipyard in New Orleans to the time she was torpedoed and beached in Whitsand Bay off Plymouth.
National WWII Museum has partnered with the SHIPS Project to locate important objects recovered from the wreck of the James Eagan Layne that could be considered for display in the Merchant Marine exhibit in the museum. These select artefacts would help to explain to visitors what daily life was like on board these ships. The SHIPS Project would be interested in any objects recovered from the wreck of the James Eagan Layne, so if you have any objects from this famous shipwreck then please contact Liberty 70 Project using the email address below.
